FG And ASUU Are Presently In Crucial Meeting To End Strike
The federal government negotiating team is currently in a meeting with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in an attempt to end the ongoing strike.
ASUU went on strike on November 4 last year, demanding improved funding of universities and implementation of previous agreements with the government.
The national president of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, led the union’s delegation to Monday’s meeting.
Before the commencement of the meeting, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who is leading the government team, said that he is hopeful that it would yield positive outcome.
He placed his optimism on the fact that the federal government has met some of the key demands of the university teachers.
Also present is the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba, who says he is there in solidarity with ASUU ahead of their own meeting with the minister later tonight.
Others in attendance are the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, officials of the Nigeria University Commission, Salaries and Wages Commission and the office of the Head of Service.
The meeting is holding at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Abuja.
